How Does Local Cryotherapy Work?
Local cryotherapy involves the short-term application of extremely low temperatures to a specific area of the body. This treatment causes muscles to contract, increasing blood flow to the treated area, soothing inflammation, and speeding up cell regeneration. Patients may experience a ‘pins and needles’ sensation at the end of the session, which quickly disappears. Cryogenic treatments are safe, cause no side effects, and deliver outstanding results for localized injuries involving the back, knee, elbow, or other joints, as well as for chronic pains, muscle tension, ligament sprains, and more.

Does localized cryotherapy work?
While whole body cryotherapy became popular not so long ago, local cryotherapy as a treatment was used for centuries. We all used ice packs to reduce pain or inflammation. Localized cryotherapy has the same benefits as cryotherapy of the whole body, but affects one specific area.
The concept of local cryotherapy is based on the short-term application of extremely low temperatures to a particular area of a patient’s body. This procedure causes muscles to contract, increasing the blood flow to the treated area, soothing inflammation, and speeding up cell regeneration. Localized cryotherapy helps to improve physical performance, gives long-term pain relief, reduces inflammation, provides fast muscle recovery, improves blood circulation and skin tone, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, and minimizes scars.
During a localized cryotherapy session, which lasts only for 8-10 minutes, the target area is affected by cold and dry air. After a session the body begins to warm up, the affected area gets back the recovering flow of oxygenated blood. Any part of the body can be given this procedure externally like the lower back, upper back, neck, shoulder, wrist, elbow, hip, ankle, knee, and heels. Localized cryo sessions are also used to decrease the issue of acne, scars, psoriasis, eczema, etc.
The effect is immediate and could last up to 7 days.
Does local cryotherapy help with some diseases?
Localized or spot cryotherapy is more effective than whole body cryotherapy in the treatment of particular most affected areas. It is used to minimize pain, promote healing, treat wounds and swelling. This type of cryotherapy can be applied to any specific injured part of the body such as the ankles, shoulders, feet, elbows, knees, and neck. Seems that local cryotherapy is ideal for athletes and active people who are susceptible to injury. But localized cryotherapy has its application in other spheres, like the beauty industry and medicine.
In medicine it is used in different chronic conditions to inhibit inflammation, to reduce pain and spasms, to decrease muscle tension, to improve blood circulation, for immunomodulation, etc. Localized cryotherapy has shown good results among people who suffer from chronic pain due to arthritis or inflammatory conditions and those who are recovering from an injury or surgery.
Localized cryo sessions are prescribed to people who suffer from acne, psoriasis, eczema, as they help to reduce redness of the skin, irritation and itching. Also, it helps to minimize scars.
